Photo Book vs Photo Album: Which One Should You Make?

28 August 2026 · The Apni Stories press

People use the two words interchangeably, but they are different objects, and picking the wrong one is how photos end up in a drawer. Here is the difference in plain terms.

A photo album holds prints. A photo book is printed.

An album is the classic version: a bound set of sleeves or adhesive pages, into which you slip physical prints. The album exists before your photos enter it. A photo book is printed as one object: your photos are laid out on pages, captions and all, and the pages themselves are printed and bound, like a book from a shop that happens to be about your life.

Where each one wins

Albums win when the prints already exist (your parents' wedding prints, old family photographs) or when you want to keep adding over years, one sleeve at a time.

Photo books win for everything born on a phone. The photos are already digital; printing them individually and sleeving them one by one is double handling. A book lets photos sit large or small, full-bleed or captioned, tells the trip in order, and costs less than printing plus a good album. It is also flatter, lighter, and looks like something you would leave on a coffee table on purpose.

What they cost in India

A decent empty album runs ₹400 to ₹1,500, plus roughly ₹8 to ₹15 per print, so a 100-photo album lands around ₹1,200 to ₹3,000 and several hours of assembly. Printed photo books in India start around ₹500 for small softcover formats from self-design sites, and from ₹1,499 for hardcover books where the design is done for you. We have laid the options out plainly on our comparison page.

The question that actually decides it

Ask where the photos are today. If they are prints in an envelope, get an album. If they are 2,000 files on a phone from your Goa trip, your wedding week, or your kid's first year, a photo book is the version of that memory people will actually pick up, and the only version that survives a lost phone.

Your trip deserves better than a camera roll.

Upload your photos, our editor designs the book in minutes, and you approve every page before we print. Hardcover books from ₹1,499, COD available, delivered across India.
